Little Potato is a popular Dong Bei style restaurant in Union city. At round six o'clock, the little restaurant is filled and people need to wait in line to get in. Dong Bei Style Chinese food starts to pick up speed in the bay area. Many new Dong Bei restaurants have opened in the past year and all very popular. (Guan Dong House in Cupertino, Nutrition House in Milpitas). Dong Bei, refers to the three northernmost provinces in China, the cuisine of this region is famous for its rich flavor and large quantity. It is the comfort food in Chinese cuisine. This region has very cold and long winters, so the food usually contains a lot of "heat", intending to warm people up. Hot pots with perserved vegetables and sweet potato starch noodles combinating with pork ribs, chicken or lamb are very common Dong Bei cuisines. Potatos, green peppers, eggplants and green beans, these earthy vegetables, are most used vegetables in Dong Bei cuisine.
The taste of Little Potato is close to family style. For $6-$8 per person, people can enjoy a nice warm and comfortable meal with friends and family, not too greasy, not too spicy, just the down to earth dishes with just the right flavors. I guess that's why Dong Bei cuisine is getting popular and that's why people are lining up in front of Little Potato.

2. Dong Bei Style Mixed Vegetable $5.50 (4/5): little greasy but very tasty, good dish to eat with rice
3. Sauteed Sliced Lotus Root $5.50 (4/5): very light and taste like something from home kitchen
4. Ten Spice Pork Meatball $6.50 (3/5): flavor ok, too much starch in the meatball
5. Young Chicken Mushroom Hotpot $7.95 (2/5): too much soy source and too much five spices has taken over the natural flavor of chicken and mushroom
