The ambiance of the place is great. The place gets good crowd and the menu is full. Having said that the food there is not the best. It is quite bland and does not represent the true taste of South Indian food.

tastylicious

It was a disappointment for me. I was expecting a lot more flavors out of the dishes, but all I got was the spiciness and nothing special. At the end of the meal, I still don't like dosa (basically I'd prefer Northern Indian cuisine over Southern). Also, I thought that charging 20% gratuity for 5 people at the bar (SEATING AT THE BAR!) was a little overboard. Now, if we sat at the table and there were 6 people, I would understand the 20% tips. But come on…at the BAR!

I have been wanting to try DOSA for quite some time now, and in the past there has always been a long wait to get in. This time around, we went there early (around 6 PM) and got seated at the counter. It was a beautiful day in San Francisco and around the time we were there, there was plenty of sun light to fill the restaurant, which gave it a very warm and inviting feeling. At the same time, the restaurant is decorated redish orange colors, which also added to the ambiance.

The word "dosa" is actually a dish that is like a savory crepe made out of rice. It is typical to have rice with South Indian cuisine rather than bread, which is more typical of Northern Indian cuisine. One of my favorite curries is the one that is made with chick pea. And sure enough, I ordered the Channa Bhatura which is a chick pea masala served with an oversized, soft, puffy wheat bread. The flavor of the curry is nicely infused and heat level of the spice was just right. Not to mention the portion was quite generous. Even though I was full, I couldn't stop dipping the bread into the curry.

DOSA is a must try, even though the prices are a bit high and the queue is a bit long at times. But hey, this is one of the better Indian restaurants in San Francisco, and that's to be expected.
